Guide for Using Tivoli Courses

Once you have logged into the LMS and navigated to the Unit’s page, you will see a few items listed. Normally there will be a ‘Course Objectives’ button that when clicked will launch a popup window displaying the objectives for this course. There will also be a ‘Launch …’ item. This is the main link to launch your course. There may also be an ‘Exercise’ link if the course contains lab instructions. You will see a ‘Schedule Lab’ button at the end of the ‘Exercise’ item when a remote lab can be scheduled for a course.

The ‘Launch …’ link will be the one that starts the course for you. This one opens a page providing you with the hardware/software requirements for this course. If there is anything that your machine does not have, you will be notified on this page and provided with a link to obtain the required resource. The software has the ability to determine your machine’s capabilities to handle the graphics and requirements of the software used in the course. Once you have downloaded anything that you need, you may start the course.

Hardware/Software Requirements Page

Clicking on the ‘Start…’ link at the bottom of the page will open up two windows. The main window will open in your browser and a support-type window will open in a pop-up. It should appear as follows:

Let’s take a look at each of these windows in turn. First, we will examine the ‘Course Overview’ window:

Course Overview

This window provides you with an overview of the course along with target audience, course prerequisites, course objectives, course version and release data, and typographical conventions. Read through these before continuing.

The pop-up Course Menu window provides you with a listing of unit and lesson titles along with links to take you to each individual one. This will provide you with very useful shortcuts once you have started your course and moved through some of the lessons.

Course Menu

This pop-up window may be brought up at anytime while in your course by simply clicking on the ‘Site Menu’ link in the banner.

Navigation through your course material is handled by the gray Next and Back buttons in the top or bottom right-hand corner of the window.

As you move through the course, a locator feature in the course banner informs you of your exact location within the course.

You can move through the course linearly using this standard navigation and can jump back to any area in by clicking on available links. Progression through the course in a non-linear fashion will require you to use the Site Menu.

There are two links in the banner area that we have not covered as yet: Search and Help.

Clicking on the Search link will open the search window as a pop-up.

Search Window

The Search window gives you the ability to search for specific terms within your course. You may enter multiple terms with a space between them or do a search for just one term. The results of your search will be displayed in the search window. If there are too many for one page, you will see a navigation button to move on to the next listing of findings. Clicking on any of the links returned from the search will open that page in the main window. To start a new search, simply enter the term(s) in the text field and click the Search button again.

The Help link opens a window containing a listing of common questions and their appropriate answers. These Help topics are related to the courseware: getting video to work, saving your place in the course, etc.
